These
Birds Walk is pleased to announce their fourth book release, The Kin Subscription
Series.
Comprised of four books, each representing an individual artist. The series
maps the lineage from proverbial student to teacher, illustrating the tie that
binds the shining neophyte to celebrated professional and those in between.
BOOK ONE. MIKE BRODIE
Mike's early work was created using a Polaroid camera.
Through careful editing, Mike's contribution to the Kin series becomes more
than a documentation, but a poetic narrative of the travels, trials, and the
lives of some of America's overlooked people. The characters and landscapes
that he captures summon the spirits of Jim Goldberg's well-known book,
"Raised By Wolves". These are images captured by a member of the
tribe, through a sympathetic lens, a magnifying glass to examine the truth of a
dead cat on the side of the road, the littered earth, bound by tones of dirt
and bone.
BOOK TWO. PAUL SCHIEK
Paul's library of images beg for the answer. The photos act as
signpost to evoke emotion, which leads to somewhere, if not the answer. Like
his previous book, "Good By Angels", the new collection is a
nihilistic yet hopeful and wistful look at the human experience. Rather than
focusing on dark spaces as a place of uncertainty, this collection uses
blown-out light to wash the image in obscurity. Paul takes a pseudo-documentary
approach and flips it drastically in post photo stages with editing and
sequencing.
BOOK THREE. ARI MARCOPOULOS
Ari continues the notion of family by turning his attention to
his immediate surroundings. This includes the world of his two sons, who using
blankets to create three-dimensional landscapes of Lego figures and battle
scenes create a microcosm of domestic life, which parallels the world studied
in his past work with members of the skateboarding community. This collection
of photos reveals layers of resemblance between his immediate family and those
of the outside world, both wear their physical scars as things of pride, battle
wounds.
JimÕs book for the kin series, a brilliant combination of text
and image that creates a human sampling dealing with timeless notions of love
loss and pain, is a classic example of GoldbergÕs art making practice.
Influenced by the greats that came before him, most notably Robert frank, Jim
is the link to a whole new generation of photography. His influence is clearly
seen throughout the preceding three books. When Jim released the seminal book
rich and poor in 1985, he solidified his role in the photo and art worlds with
his ability to push the viewer to the places where they could easily turn a
blind eye; he engulfs and engages the viewer with stunningly beautiful prose
and images that make it hard to not want to look. Awareness comes from looking at Jims photographs, and here
again he does not fail to keep showing us what we so desperately need to
see.
Jim Goldberg is considered one of today's most
respected photographers. His work with various sub-cultures and use of image
and text are a landmark in the field. His photographs have appeared in George,
Esquire, Gear, Colours, Dazed and Confused and Nest magazines. He has been
exhibiting internationally for over twenty years. His books include Rich and
Poor, Raised by Wolves and Hospice. He has received numerous awards and public
art commissions including NEA, Guggenheim and Gerbode Fellowships. He is
currently working on two new book projects: one autobiographical and one on the
immigrants of Greece. Jim holds the highly respected role of magnum
photographer and is represented by Pace/MacGill in New York and Stephen
Wirtz gallery in San Francisco.
Ari Marcopoulos was born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands in
1957. He currently works and lives in Sonoma, CA. His work has been published
in The New York Times Magazine, Interview, Paper, and Blind Spot and many more.
His photographs have been acquired by the Whitney Museum of American Art and
SFMOMA. Books include Out and About, 2005;Even the president of the United
States sometimes has got to stand naked, 2005 ; Kids Born out of Fire, 2004;
Pass the Mic: Beastie Boys 1991-1996, 2001; and Transitions and Exits, 2000.
Marcopoulos' present work is a portrait of his family, an extension of the
proverbial "family" comprised of skateboarders and snowboarders that
he has documented in the past. Ari
has shown in such galleries and museums as Whitney Museum of American art,
Paula Cooper Gallery, Rena Bransten Gallery and PS1/MOMA to name a few.
Paul SchiekÕs seemingly casual style spotlights and
transforms an ordinary or even mundane subject or event, into something
unexpected, surreal, or spectacular. Schiek roots his photographic practice in
a search for connectedness through the exploration of the epic questions of
god, death and love, revealing in his images a preoccupation with the struggle
of opposites. Paul shoots commercially for magazines such as Slap, Mass Appeal,
Big and his photos can be seen on numerous record covers. He also runs These
Birds Walk Publishing, the moniker under which he has published three books.
Diptych, its so beautiful I want it to die and good by angels. He is
represented by the Stephen Wirtz gallery in San Francisco California.
Mike Brodie spends his time traveling the United States
armed with a camera and the spirit of youth. His desire to tell the story of
his travels has led him to the crevices and cracks of riverbeds bled dry by the
heat of a backwoods encampment, into the wizened gaze of a youthful squatter
amongst the ruins of the country's deserted dreams, those things that have been
broken down, left by the side of the road and forgotten. Mike curates and runs
the acclaimed website,PLRDS.COM. Most recently mikes photos graced the cover
and pages of look look magazine. His first show will be at M+B Gallery, Los
Angeles in October 2006.
